Lady Cats earn a split in openers

OSMOND — The Hartington-Newcastle Lady Wildcats used a big second-half surge to take control and then cruised to a 60-41 victory here Saturday afternoon.

The HNS offense hit on all cylinders as the game started, with the Lady Wildcats earning a 19-17 first-quarter scoring advantage.

The two teams settled down after that with both squads putting up 11 in the second frame.

Hartington-Newcastle took charge to open the second half, using a tough defense and solid shooting to earn a 16-5 scoring advantage to take a 46-33 lead into the final frame.

For the second game in a row, Abbe Morten led the Purple Pride offense, burning the nets for 28 points. Kayden Jueden, and Delayne Sudbeck also hit for double figures as both chipped in for 10.

PONCA — Abbe Morten did everything she could to carry the Hartington-Newcastle Lady Wildcats to victory here Thursday, but it just wasn’t enough.

The HNS senior dropped in a game-high 21 points to lead her team, but Ponca still managed to earn the 54-27 win.

Ponca came out on fire after the season-opening tip, racing to a 13-2 first-quarter advantage. HNS regrouped in the second frame to pump in eight points, but the Lady Indians hit for 12 to take a 25-10 lead into the locker room.

The Big Blue outscored the Lady Cats 29-17 in the second half to seal the win.

Alivia Morten led the Lady Cats on the boards, pulling down six rebounds.

Ashlyn Kingsbury and Alyssa Cosgrove led Ponca. Kingsbury had 16 points, while Crosgrove chipped in with 13 points.
