Lady Cats advance to SubDistrict title game

Posted in:

PONCA - The Hartington-Newcastle Lady Wildcats overcame a 9-0 scoring run put on by Niobrara-Verdigre in the third quarter, and used a monstrous fourth quarter offensive scoring spree to beat the Lady Cougars in the second game of the round of the girl’s D1-3 SubDistrict tournament Tuesday.

The Lady Wildcats came right out of the gates with full-court pressure, causing all sorts of confusion for the Cougars forcing several early turnovers, one of which found the waiting hands of H-N freshmen Alivia Morten who knocked down a jump shot to give the Lady Wildcats the lead.  The physicality of the game could be felt right away as both teams found themselves in foul trouble early in the first half.  The first quarter ended in a dead heat, 8-6 in favor of the Wildcats.

In the second frame, Cougar freshmen Chrissenna Swalley gave V-N its first lead with a 3-pointer with 6:08 left in the half. This was quickly rebutted by Hartington’s Delayne Sudbeck, giving HNS back the one point advantage.  With both teams in the bonus for fouls and a successful trip to the charity stripe for Alivia Morten, the Cats went to the locker room with a 16-13 lead.

The third quarter saw a spark get ignited by the Cougars behind the play of junior Emily Parks and Swalley who would knock down a series of shots from downtown en route to their 9-0 scoring melee.  The Wildcats had to perform the rest of the third quarter without senior Abbe Morten who was forced to exit the game with what appeared to be an ankle injury.  The third quarter would finally come to an end after HNS was outscored by N-V 12-6, giving the Cougars a 25-22 lead heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter started with both teams in foul trouble, but it would prove to be irrelevant as the Lady Wildcats opened the flood gates on their opponents dumping in 24 additional points while holding the Cougars to just 14 to seal up the 46-39 victory.

Leading the charge for the Lady Wildcats was junior Kayden Jueden with a game-high 17 points, followed by Alivia Morten with 12, Delayne Sudbeck with 11, Keanna Korth with 4 and Abbe Morten with 2 points.  The Lady Wildcats will Now face Cedar Catholic Thursday night in Ponca for the D1-3 SubDistrict title.
