Lady Blue Devils advance to conference final

HOMER — It looked as though Wynot’s run to the Lewis & Clark Conference volleyball tournament title might fall one match short as Laurel-Concord-Coleridge came out of the gate in the best-of-five-sets match hitting on all cylinders.

The Lady Bears won the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-18 before the Lady Blue Devils got things turned around and took sets three and four by identical 25-16 scores.

In the final sprint to 15, Wynot held on for a 15-10 win in the fifth set to win the match and advance to take on Wakefield in the conference tournament championship on Oct. 17.

Earlier in the evening, the Lady Blue Devils turned away Hartington-Newcastle in a best-of-three match 23-25,25-21 and 25-17 to grab a spot in the semifinals.

Kayla Pinkelman paced the Wynot attack with 13 kills in the match with LCC, Allison Wieseler added 11.

Sophia Geisen had a great mach getting the offense going with 40 setasists, then made it a double-double with 14 digs.

The Lady Blue Devils helped their own cause with nine ace serves in the match.

They defended the net as well with 18 total blocks led by Wieseler with seven.

Kinslee Heimes and Kenna Oloigmueller had 24 and 23 digs respectively.

In the opening match of the evening, finally gained the advantage on the stubborn Lady Wildcats with the three set win.

Wieseler had a dozen winners in the first match and Pinkelman added 10. Pinkelman made it a double-double with 11 digs.

Geisen had 33 assists and Oligmueller had five stuffs at the net.

Oligmueller also put up 18 digs in the match.

“We played two tough matches against a couple of teams that showed up ready to play,” first-year Wynot head coach Sidney Messersmith said.

“It was really nice to see our girls fight and dig deep.”

On. Oct 12, Wynot hosted Wausa for a Parent’s Night match, the final home date for the Lady Blue Devils for the regular season.

Geisen hit a career milestone with her 1,000th assist in the match, pacing her team to a 25-12, 25-17 and 25-18 win over the Lady Vikings.

Geisen finished the match with 25 assists.

Nine of the assists went to Pinkelman and eight went to Wieseler.

Wieseler dominated the net with eight blocks and Pinkelman recorded 20 digs. Heimes had 18 and Myrah Sudbeck had 16.

“It was a great way to send our seniors off with a win,” said firstyear Lady Blue Devil coach, Sidney Messersmith.

After the match with Wakefield in the conference finals, Wynot has one game remaining on the regular season slate, hitting the road to take on Bancroft-Rosalie Oct. 20.

Wynot defeats Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 23-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-10.
