Lady ‘Cats go 2-2 in home tournament

HARTINGTON — Hartington-Newcastle hosted its own invitational volleyball tournament Oct. 8 in Hartington.

The Lady Wildcats won two of four matches in the tournament to improve to 6-16 on the season.

In the opening round, HNS swept Tri County of southern Nebraska 2-0, in round two dropped a match to Winside 0-2, then defeated Tri County Northeast 2-0 before dropping the final match of the tournament, 2-1.

Against the Lady Bears, the Lady Wildcats bolted to a 25-8 win in set one before dropping the next two, 20-25 and 19-25.

Lauren Howell led the Hartington-Newcastle attack with eight winners at the net, Mani Lange added five.

Lange also rifled three ace serves, while Kennadi Peitz had a pair.

Alivia Morten had 10 set assists while Olivia Grutsch registered nine.

Four HNS players hit double digits in digs led by Abi Rice with 15.

Peitz and Grutsch added 13, Morten had 10. Zoey Gratzfeld, Morten and Lange each had a block at the net.

Against the Lady Wolfpack, Tri County Northeast took the Lady Wildcats to extra points before they persevered with a 26-24 win in set-one then blasted TCNE 25-14 to sweep the match.

Morten and Grutsch had nine and seven assists respectively.

Howell again led the offense with six kills,Lange contributed five. Howell also added three ace serves and a couple of blocks.

The Lady Wildcats again had four players with double-figures. Morten had 17, Peitz had a dozen,Rice and Grutsch had 10 each.

Winside swept the Lady Wildcats, but Hartington-Newcastle didn’t go away without a fight. The first set was 25-22, while the second set was 25-20.

Howell had seven kills, McKenzie Bruning had six, Morten and Lange each added five.

Morten and Peitz had an ace serve each and Morten made 14 assists, while Grutsch tacked on 10.

Howell also had a block and Rice had 11 digs. Hartington-Newcastle was set to take on Tri County Northeast and Winside again on Oct. 11 in a triangular in Winside before hosing an Oct. 13 triangular with Ponca and and Walthill.

The Lewis & Clark Tourney action begins Oct. 15.
