Kuehn records great finish at State

Posted in:

KEARNEY — Riley Kuehn had seen this before.

Lousy weather. High stakes golf and high presure shots.

None of it phased him, though as he fired a 76 to finish in a tie for second-place at the Class C State Golf Tournament Wednesday.

Eli Fox of Grand Island Central Catholic and Oakland-Craig’s Ian Lundquist also fired 76s on the day.

Kuehn shot 36s on both the front and back nine.

He only managed to record one birdie on the day, but shot for par on 11 other holes.

The poor weather conditions forced the Nebraska High School Activities Association to reduce the tourney from a two-day event, to a one-day winner-take-all challenge.

A late Eli Fox putt gave Grand Island Central Catholic the Class C State title.

The Grand Island team finished the day with a 324 at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course to just edge out Battle Creek at 325.

Preston Carbaugh of Cambridge carded a 74, to earn Class C State Medalist honors.

Cedar Catholic’s Ted Bengston was right in the thick of things early in the first round, tied with Kuehn after the first four holes. The weather got the best him as the day progressed though. Bengston ended up finishing with five double bogeys for a final score of 95.

Nolan Klug shot a 100 to finish 70th on the day.
