Kuehn is the king of the green thumb

HARTINGTON — If you travel around this corner of the state taking in golf meets most of the spring, or you are getting a little long in the tooth, there's a well-kept secret being kept here at the Hartington Golf Club — well, maybe not so much a secret as it is an unspoken fact.

Gary Kuehn can grow some grass, and trim it, and shape it ... I think he can even make it smile.

As I traveled around the past several years to high school golf meets and as I have spent the last couple of golf seasons playing with some peers in the Northeast Nebraska Senior Men's League, I've witnessed a lot of courses.

And you talk with other people who have witnessed a lot of courses in coaching or spectating, and most of the conversations about courses end with: 'I hear Hartington is in great shape.'

It doesn't take long to figure out that's a true statement.

There is one big reason why the Hartington golf course looks so good: It's Kuehn. The master of the grass is low-key about his secret to making the green stuff.

'I have a 1,200-foot hose and a lot of friendly neighbors,' Kuehn said. 'Whenever possible, I water the greens — even in the winter.'

Most courses with an irrigation system have no access to that system during the cold months, but with Kuehn's extended use of hoses and the friendly neighbors surrounding the course, he can get water when he feels he needs it.
