Knights top Cedar for Dist. title

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — Penalties and turnovers made all the difference here Friday night.

Norfolk Catholic took advantage of Cedar Catholic mistakes to earn the 14-10 win in a defensive slugfest and claim the District title.

Against Norfolk Catholic, the Trojans outgained NCHS 264-230, but also ran 27 more plays and could not convert on those extra snaps.

Four turnovers and yards in penalties stalled many drives. “Offensively, we were able to put

“Offensively, we were able to put some drives together, but we made too many mistakes and put ourselves in bad positions,” Coach Chad Cattau said. “We have a lot of things to clean up before the playoff game and I know our kids will work hard to fix those things.”

Easton Becker ran for 103 yards on 23 carries and scored the lone Trojan TD while Tate Thoene added 97 yards toting the rock.

Cedar Catholic (7-2, 3-1) will open the Class C-2 playoffs at 2 p.m., Friday, as the No. 11 seed and travel seven hours to take on No. 6 Bridgeport (6-1).

“Bridgeport is a team that has played excellent defense throughout the season,” Cattau said. “They haven’t given up very many points all season, so our offense will need to be crisp.

“Their offense revolves around their quarterback. He is a very good player, so we need to really work to keep him contained. They will definitely provide a great challenge for us and we will need to prepare well in order to win. We will need to make sure we are very focused and ready to play after a long bus ride.”

Connor Vlach, a senior linebacker and tight end feels good about his team’s potential to make a run.

“I am pretty confident going into the playoffs,” Vlach said. “One of our big things is when we get up against the wall we bounce back, and we use that to bend and not break. We are able to come back not discouraged. That’s definitely going to help us. The loss this week, we have to learn from it.”
