Karen will always be our beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Karen is the daughter of Louis and Helen (Ankeny) Abts, born in Coleridge Jan. 14, 1955. Karen attended school at Dixon, Allen and Emerson in an opportunity room until the age of 18. She then worked at Region IV at the work shop in South Sioux City, and stayed with Peg Goodsell until she could no longer climb stairs. In November 2009, she moved to the Wakefield Health Care Center. She was an avid member of the Dixon United Methodist Church, and later, the Allen United Methodist Church. If members of the church would happen to miss a Sunday, Karen was always the one to count on to find out the reason why by saying “you quit church?”

She was always on the move when she was young, much to the chagrin of her siblings, she never took a nap. She went on many adventures to neighboring farms, many times with her favorite animals in tow, usually two-three dogs and a horse, maybe a calf, and a cat or two. She had a path worn in the ditch to get to Grandma Ankeny’s house.

Some of Karen’s favorite activities were going out to eat at her favorite restaurants, including Euni’s, seeing her friends and visiting with and teasing her friends at the ball games.

In her younger years, she participated in showing her favorite calf at the Dixon County Fair. It was named Brownie, had both ears frozen off and would follow her anywhere.

Karen attended many ballgames of her siblings, nieces and nephews, including traveling to state softball and baseball.

Karen loved looking at picture books, doing puzzles, making cards and making friends. Karen knew everyone, she may not have remembered everyone’s name, but she knew everyone’s face, and they knew her.

She is survived by her mother, Helen Abts; her siblings, David (Marilyn) Abts, John (Nancy) Abts, Richard (Denise) Abts and Cheryl (Steve) Greve; six nieces and six nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews

Karen is preceded in death by her father, Louis Abts; grandparents, Hebert and Beulah Abts, and Chester and Grace Ankeny; and nephew, Max Greve.

Memorials may be directed to Karen’s family for later designation.
