Juniors team lose first two games of season

Posted in:

HARTINGTON – Randolph’s Junior Legion team had a tough outing on Thursday as they traveled to Felber Park in Hartington.

Randolph had the game within reach going into the bottom of the fourth where they were only down by four but Hartington doubled their score in the bottom of that inning, making the score 8-0 Hartington going into the top of the fifth.

In the top of the fifth Randolph tried to answer back with Dylan Schutt hitting a RBI double and soon after another run was scored on a wild pitch. That was all for Randolph scoring though as they would be shut out in the top of the sixth and Hartington drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the inning to achieve the run rule and end the game with a score of 10-2.

Dayton Winkelbauer pitched two innings and only gave up one hit and had four strikeouts. Hitting for Randolph was a struggle as they only tallied three total hits with one of them being an RBI double by Schutt - the only extra base hit of the night.

The Juniors team suffered another tough loss in the season opener May 23 in Orchard.

The game started as a pitching duel as the score was tied up going into the top of the third inning. Randolph was the one to open the scoring with two runs in the top of the third.

The runs came off a dropped third strike by Orchard which scored the two runners on second and third, a dropped throw to first and a throw too late for the scoring Hunter Mc-Ghee who made it all the way from second.

Orchard immediately answered with two runs of their own as Isaac Pavlik hit a ball to center which flew over the head of the Randolph centerfielder. The other run was scored on a wild pickoff throw to third.

The bottom of the fourth was where it fell apart for the visiting Randolph junior team as Orchard rattled off nine runs. Most of which were set up by a plethora of walks and steals which made it easy for Orchard to score on singles and passed balls. Randolph was not able to keep up with Orchards’ scoring streak and the game ended on a hit by pitch in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded which brought in the winning run from third.

Hitting for Randolph was hard to come by as they only had three hits, but still managed to score five runs with great base running.

Although the team didn’t have a great night at the plate, Gage Jensen went 1-1 with two walks and his double down the first baseline drove in an RBI. Randolph’s pitchers had a rough time finding the strike zone as they gave away 11 walks. Although he only pitched .2 innings, Matt Gubbels still tallied two strikeouts which was one away from most on Randolph’s team for the game.
