John Wayne Casal

BELDEN — John Wayne Casal, 72, Belden, died Jan. 18, 2019, at Faith Regional Health Services, Norfolk.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time, Wednesday, at Johnson Funeral Home, Randolph.

Funeral services are 11 a.m., Jan. 23, at Johnson Funeral Home, Randolph, with Rev. Jim and Rev. Kathleen Splitt, Union Presbyterian Church, Belden, officiating.

Interment will be in Belden Cemetery, Belden.

Military Rites will be provided by Alderson Unit American Legion #149, Belden.

Pallbearers will be Doug Casal, Ryan Casal, Evan Erickson, Ed Keifer, Brandon Snider and Mason Snider.

John was born July 7, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Gordon Jacob and Anita May (Patton) Casal. He was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church, Belden, his entire life. Growing up, he was active in 4-H and showed Grand Champion and Reserve Champion calves at the Cedar County Fair. He was very active in sports, playing football and basketball in high school and baseball in the summer. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1964. He attended Wayne State College playing football and then Mount Marty College, Yankton, S.D., prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Infantry until he attended quartermaster school and became a Supply Corporal packing parachutes for an Airborne Unit overseas during the Vietnam War. He served from November 1967 until his honorable discharge in August 1969. When he returned, he graduated from Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, Iowa.

John married Faye Voetburg in 1967, and later divorced. For several years, John worked in the pork plant in Madison, Iowa; Beef Packers meat packing plant, South Sioux City, Iowa; M.G. Waldbaum Company, Wakefield, and spent several years as an over the road truck driver for Hirschbach Trucking Company. The last 20 years he was a devoted, loving caregiver and guardian to Justin McKibbon.

John enjoyed swimming, fishing at Gavin’s Point Dam, and hunting in his youth. In his adult years, he spent summers attending various car shows, where he entered his favorite Ford LTD and won many trophies he proudly displayed in his home. John also enjoyed gardening and planting flowers. He shared the love of plants with his mom, and during college, was employed by Gurney’s Seed and Nursery Company, Yankton, S.D. He planted several rose bushes for his mom to enjoy.

John is survived by his sister, Suzanne (Val) Sydow, Lyons; brother, Douglas Casal, Papillion; nieces and nephews, Kim (Kevin) Campbell, Sanger, Texas; Angela (Ken) Dyer, Greeley, Colo.; Renee (Brandon) Snider, Martell; Ryan (Erin Ludlow) Casal, Murray; and Rebecca (Evan) Erickson, Papillion; greatnieces and great-nephews, Sean Campbell, Dallas, Texas; Cali, Kyle and Lexi Bahnsen, Greeley, Colo.; Mason and Cole Snider, Martell; Colter Casal, Murray; and Elaina Erickson, Papillion; other cousins, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents.
