Irene E. Jacobs

HARTINGTON — Irene E. Jacobs, 97, Hartington, died Jan. 28, 2019, at the Hartington Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Visitation and a Vigil service were Friday at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, and continued Saturday one hour prior to services.

Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 2 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with the Rev. Owen Korte officiating.

Burial was at the St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Matthew Wieseler, Michael Wieseler, Nathan Wieseler, Colton Jacobs, Dakota Jacobs, Wyatt Jacobs and Zach Humphrey.

Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters, Sarah Hinds and Devin Jacobs.

Irene Elizabeth was born Dec. 11, 1921, in Hartington, to Casper and Lucy (Thoene) Promes. She grew up the Bow Valley area and went to school at Bunker Hill country school until the eighth grade. Irene’s father died when she was 16, and from that point she stayed on the farm to help her mother and brother with the farming. She married George P. Jacobs Nov. 26, 1957, in St. James. They moved to the Wynot area in 1966, where they farmed until moving to Hartington in 1998. George died Dec. 30, 1999, at the age of 74. Irene lived in her home in Hartington until Oct. 30, 2014, when she moved into the nursing home.

Irene was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, its Ladies Guild, Christian Mothers and was a member of the Perpetual Adoration. She was also a member of the Wynot American Legion Auxiliary Post #31. Irene was a former President and Vice President of the St. James Altar Society.

She enjoyed bowling, gardening, canning, tending to her flower beds and playing Dominos. She belonged to several card clubs. Irene was an amazing cook and baker, along with being an excellent sewer and doing embroidery work. Irene loved to spend time with her family, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren.

Irene is survived by her three children and spouses, Marlene (Danny) Wieseler, Hartington; Dennis (Jeri) Jacobs, Newcastle; and Alan (Maureen) Jacobs, Wynot; nine grandchildren, Matthew and Jamie Wieseler, Sarah and Adam Hinds, Michael and Nathan Wieseler, Colton and Shelby Jacobs, Devin Jacobs, Zach and Jessie Humphrey, Dakota Jacobs, and Wyatt Jacobs; six great-grandchildren, Gage Jacobs, Zander Humphrey, Ava and Adilyn Hines, and Abel and Will Wieseler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Jacobs; and brother, Alfred Promes.
