Hwy. 81 accident claims life of Hartington man

HARTINGTON — Jake Keiter, 86, Hartington, died in Sioux Falls, S.D., Tuesday, as the result of injuries suffered in a Monday evening accident.

The accident occurred just before 5:30 p.m., Monday, at the intersection of Nebraska Highway 12 and U.S. Highway

81.

Cedar County Sheriff Larry Koranda said the east-bound Ford pickup truck driven by Jacob Keiter failed to stop at the intersection and collided with a south-bound Ford pickup truck being driven by 45-year-old Shane Pedersen, of Pierce.

Keiter was taken to a hospital in Yankton, S.D., and then transferred to a hospital in Sioux Falls.

Law enforcement reports indicate he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Keiter’s death brings the number of Nebraska traffic fatalities to 216 so far this year.
