Homer boys surge past Wynot Blue Devils

HOMER — The Homer Knights picked up their first win of the season as they easily downed the Wynot Blue Devils Tuesday.

The Knights used big first and third quarter runs to drop Wynot to 1-4 on the season.

Homer had little trouble breaking the Blue Devils press as the Knights ran past Wynot defenders for easy transition baskets. On the defense side pressure

defense would force the Blue Devils into a 30-15 disadvantage in turnovers.

Homer got an outstanding game from Caleb Kearnes who poured in 21 points and finished with a double double of 11 rebounds for the game. Landon Gilster hit three treys on his way to 13 points as well.

Wynot’s one bright spot was Anthony Haberman who hit a pair of threes and went 6-6 from the line to finish with 16 points.

In the first quarter Homer got six points from Caleb Kearnes and four points from Grant Lander. Wynot did not hit a shot from the field and got all 6 of their points from the charity stripe as the Knights raced to a 17-6 early advantage.

Wynot came to life in the second quarter as they got a trey by Anthony Haberman and put-backs by Hunter Heimes and Garrett Lange as well as going 8-10 from the line.

Homer got a pair of three pointers by Landon Gilster and one each from Caleb Kearnes and Scott Kearnes to minimize the damage and the Knights took a 31-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter Anthony Haberman hit a floater in the lane and Trystan Heimes and Garrett Lange each hit a bucket in close but the Blue Devils continued to lose ground.

Homer got six more points from Caleb Kearnes and three more layups by other players to increase their lead to 43- 26 going into the final period.

In the final period Wynot tried to rally some with five more points by Haberman and a trey by Jack Kuchta, but Homer kept the pressure on and four more points by Caleb Kearnes and buckets by reserves Avery Overfelt, James Snow and Jake Huerta allowed the Knights to widen their lead to a 58-37 win.
