Hoesing claims gold at Oakland wrestling meet

OAKLAND — Cedar Catholic‘s Eric Hoesing claimed the top spot on the podium Saturday at the Oakland-Craig Invitational.

Hoesing posted a 3-0 record to help his Trojan team earn a 10th-place finish in the 18-team tournament.

He now boasts a 29-3 record on the year.

Three other Cedar wrestlers also earned medals at the meet.

Kerby Hochstein posted a 4-1 record to finish fourth on the day. Nash Albers put together a 3-2 mark to finish fifth, while Jacob Keiser went 2-3 for a sixth-place finish.

Hoesing earned a first-round bye then picked up a pin over Dylan Silva of Logan View as the whistle blew to end the first period.

Hoesing then picked up a 4-2 semifinal round win over Caden Egr of Yutan and out-lasted Oakland-Craig’s Tom Maline to earn a 10-4 decision in the title match.

Nash Albers started his day off in the 132-pound division with a loss to Carter Plowman of Conestoga.

Albers bounced back to pin Dominic Spies of West Point-Beemer at the close of the first period. He then pinned Norfolk Catholic’s Carter Wattier just before the clock expired on the first period.

He next earned a 9-1 major decision over Camden Mueller of Logan View before losing again to Plowman in the consolation semifinals.

Albers was then awarded the fifth-place medal.

Kerby Hochstein started his day with pin over Jake Hunke of North Bend in 1:16 in the 138-pound division.

In the quarterfinals, Hunter McNulty, Logan View, pinned Hochstein in :54. Hochstein came back to earn a :48 pin over Gabe Reinert of Wakefield-Allen and then claim a 12-7 decision over James Plowman, Conestoga, and a 4-3 win over Allan Olander of Norfolk Catholic to advance to the third-place match.

Logan View’s Hunter McNulty earned that win to give Hochstein a fourth-place finish.

Jacob Keiser earned a sixthplace medal in the 190-pound weight class.

He earned a quick :37 pin over Demarius Bosveld, North Bend, to start his day, then picked up a 7-5 win over Laurel’s Kolby Casey in the quarterfinals.

Keiser was bounced into the consolations after being pinned in the semifinals by Logan Booth of Logan View. Demarius Bosveld, North Bend, then earned a pin over Keiser in 4:37.

In the fifth-place match Cooper Colson of West Point-Beemer pinned Keiser early in the second period.

Keegan Carl pinned Wesley Hussey of Logan View in 3:14 in his opening matchat 106-pounds, but fell to Edward Pena of West Point-Beemer in the quarterfinals in a third-period pin.

Carl then defeated Logan View’s Wyatt Olson with a pin early in the third period, but finished his day with a 10-8 loss to Alex Borboya of West Point-Beemer.

Cole Steffensen competed at 145 pounds for Cedar, losing both of his matches on the day.

The Cedar Catholic wrestling team will be in action again Saturday when they travel to Plainview for a tournament.

Cedar will then close out the regular season with the MidState Conference Tourney at Battle Creek Feb.6 and the Norfolk Catholic Invitational Feb. 8.
