HNS rally falls short against Lady Knights

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Hartington-Newcastle Lady Wildcats split a pair of Lewis and Clark Conference games last week.

The local girls earned a 13-point win over Randolph Tuesday, but dropped a 48-36 decision to Homer at home Thursday.

Thursday’s game was much closer than the final score indicates.

Homer jumped out to a sizeable lead in the first frame, but the Lady Cats whittled that deficit down to just one point over the course of the next 16 minutes.

Kenna Korth hit an inside jumper off of a Kayden Jueden assist to pull the Lady Wildcats to within five points, 30-25 with 4:40 left in the third quarter.

Homer’s Hannah Harris responded by driving the lane for a lay-in to give the Lady Knights a 32-25 advantage.

Jueden then banked one in to again cut the lead to five, 32-27.

Mackenna Clarkson squared up and nailed a trey from the right side of the key to bring the Lady Cats to within two points, 32-30, with 2:20 left in the third quarter, but Harris hit 1-2 from the charity stripe to make it 33-30.

The Lady Cats drew within one point when Abbe Morten swiped the ball and drove it coast to coast for a lay-in with just 14 seconds left in the frame to make it 33-32.

The Lady Cats were not able to get any closer, though as Homer hit some big shots early in the fourth then hit its free throws down the stretch to pull away for the win.

The Lady Cats were once again led by Abbe Morten, who dropped in a team high 14 points. Keanna Korth also had a solid effort, connecting for 12 points.

Kayden Jueden led the team on the boards, ripping down 12 rebounds.
