HNS golfers have busy week on the course

Posted in:

PIERCE — The Hartington-Newcastle golf team competed in their own invite, won a triangular, then competed in Pierce last week.

The HNS squad fired a 190 to earn top honors in the triangular with Ponca and LCC.

Reece Morten earned medalist honors with a 39.

“It was a good day,” Coach Ken Kneifl said. “Reece Morten’s 39 and Turner Dendinger’s 41 are both tournamenet personal bests. As a team, we continue to work and improve. Being young and somewhat inexperienced we are prone to bouts of inconsistancy, but Coach Johnson and myself like where we are headed.”

The Wildcat golfers finished eighth in their home match, then finished seventh at the Pierce Invitational Saturday.

Morten 1ed the team at both meets.

He carded an 86 on his home course, then fired a 95 at Pierce to finish in 18th place there.

“All-in-all a bit of a tough day. Each of the kids did some good things today, but each ran into some tough stretches. Being a young team we are all seeing many of these courses for the first time and certain situations for the first time,” Coach Ken Kneifl said.

The young Wildcat golfers did a good job of learning from their mistakes, though, Kneifl said.

“To their credit, the kids scored a total of 25 better on the back nine than they did on the front. Pierce is a nine-hole course so you could see them put lessons learned on the first nine into play on the back nine,” Kneifl said.
