HNS extends closure to at least May 1

HARTINGTON — Hartington-Newcastle Public School Supt. A.J. Johnson announced Thursday that the local school will remain closed until at least May 1 because of the COVID-19 virus pandemic.

Johnson said the decision was made, "after consulting with state and local health departments, and following the recommendations of the Commissioner of Education and the Governor."

During this time all school facilties will be closed to the public. Students will not be allowed to participate in any school practices or activities during the closure.

Johnson also noted that any school event originally scheduled for this time frame is also indefinitely postponed.

Johnson also noted that beginning Tuesday, March 31, the school lunch program will be expanded.

"We will be offering free meals to all HNS students and any child ages 1-18 who lives in the school district," he said, emphasizing this is open to any child in the school district, regardless of which school they attend.

All meals are being reimbursed by the federal government.

Johnson said anyone wishing to sign up for the meals can do so by calling the school at 402-254-3947 or by going to the school website at hnscats.org.

Johnson said the school staff and administration really appreciates all of the support they have been getting from parents and the community.

"Thank you for your patience during this difficult time. I know that together, all of us will make it through this. Please continue to stay safe and practice social distancing and encourage the students to do so as well," he said.
