HNS, Cedar could be set for another showdown

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Lady Wildcats finally found some of that volleyball magic to translate onto the basketball court.

After a 1-1 week, the Lady Cats are now 8-13, having won three of their last five.

The HNS girls began SubDistrict action Tuesday night against Boyd County. The Lady Wildcats are the second seed in the SubDistrict.

Thursday’s SubDistrict title game could easily pit the Lady Wildcats against top-seeded Cedar Catholic in a repeat from the volleyball season. The Lady Wildcats upset Cedar in that game.

Senior Delayne Sudbeck said she would love to see the two Hartington schools square off in a winner take all game.

“It’s always definitely fun to play Cedar Catholic because it’s Hartington versus Harlington,” she said. “The atmosphere is always ramped up and everyone is on the edge of the seat with everyone cheering even if it’s a blowout or super close.

“It’s always a good time. They want to beat us, and we want to beat them so we will do whatever it takes to be ready and give it 110

First, the HNS girls have to get past in first-round action and Cedar must advance from their tourney opener.

HNS prepared for post-season with a 36-30 win over Wausa last week.

Keanna Korth scored 10 points while Alivia Morten and Kayden Jueden each finished with seven points apiece in the win over the Lady Vikes.

“The girls had them beat by nearly 20 the last time we played, and I believe they were a little overconfident,” Lady Wildcats head coach Josh Morten said. “Wausa came out and really competed. We were able to get the victory at the end, while Keanna had a solid night.”

The Lady Wildcats wrapped their campaign with a matchup with the defending D2 champions and perennial powers from Wynot, losing 49-22.

“We came out and competed very well to start the game,” Josh Morten said. “We were down 17-12 at the end of one quarter and went four of 10 from the free throw line. Kayden got in foul trouble early. Everything goes through her and with her not on the floor our team is very different.

“She didn’t play the whole second quarter and it showed. Wynot is a very good team and very well coached. We just got down and couldn’t recover. This game is always a good game to prepare us for post season.”

Statistics were not made available.

Sudbeck sees the Lady Wildcats beginning to trend in the right direction before the postseason, similar to the volleyball team’s run to a subdistrict title.

“We are all thankful to get a full season in when we all thought we were going to be done in December,” Sudbeck said. “As far as what we’ve done, we’ve worked our hardest. We started off slow, but at the start of the new year, Josh would tell us, `effort and attitude is all you can control.’ So, we changed that to fun, attitude, confidence and effort and that’s our mindset going into all the games and that has definitely helped us.

“After the Homer (Jan. 16, 61-34, loss), we definitely had a turnaround on how hard we played and that has definitely helped us get some more wins.”

The youth of the team has been a topic for the season with so many underclassmen having to contribute and the physicality of the sport’s inherent challenges when going head-to-head with older girls.

“We have about half of our team is freshmen,” Sudbeck said. “We are also never the tall team or the bigger team.”
