OSMOND — The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats had to open the new basketball season last week against two of the best teams in the state.

Against Osmond, the Cats put their offense into high gear to open the contest. Unfortunately, the Tigers did the same, and were able to out score HNS 23-18 in the first frame.

The two teams traded baskets in the second frame, with Osmond squeezing out a 15-12 scoring advantage to take a 38-30 lead into the locker room.

Coach Nick Haselhorst’s team was able to set the tempo in the third quarter and the Cats cut into the Tiger lead, outscoring the home team, 17-13, to trail 51-47 heading into the final frame. The Orange and Black sealed the win in the final frame with a 20-12 scoring run to give the Tigers the 71-59 win.

HNS was led on the night by Sam Harms, who dropped in 22 points. Matthew Meisenheimer and Shaye Morten also hit for double figures with 11 points each. Osmond was led by Keaton Timmerman’s game-high 25 points.

PONCA — The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats found out Thursday exactly why Carter Kingsbury is favored to earn All State status again this year.

Kingsbury scored 26 points and added seven rebounds to lead Ponca to a 72-57 season-opening win over the Wildcats here Thursday.

Ponca raced out to a fast start, building a 27-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back from there.

Sam Harms had the inside game working well for the Wildcats, as he worked the paint for 20 points to lead HNS.

Ponca had all facets of its game working well, especially its long shot as they connected on 13 treys.

Kingsbury hit four 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes. He showed off his athleticism with a dunk midway through the second frame.

Sam Harms wasn’t to be outdone, though. He answered with a dunk of his own following a couple of Hartington-Newcastle free throws to bring the Wildcats back to within 34-15.

Bryar Bennett hit three from downtown to open the second period as the Indians continued to roll. The home team ended the first half up 38-19.

The Ponca lead grew to 47-23 after a trey from Cayden Phillips with 4:30 left in the third period, but Hartington-Newcastle came charging back with an 8-2 run to close out the frame.

Despite the big deficit, the Wildcats never let up. Harms and Shaye Morten kept dropping in baskets, eventually forcing Ponca to call a timeout with just over two minutes left in the third frame.

HNS outscored the Indians 23-18 in the final frame, but by then the reserves were getting their time on the court.
