HNS Board approves remodeling project for two new classrooms

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Hartington-Newcastle School Board Monday approved a $94,639 bid from Radec Construction to build two new classrooms at the school.

The classrooms are being built in the space previously occupied by the high school library.

The high school and elementary school libraries were consolidated over the summer to make room for the project.

The rooms, which will house two seperate sixth grade classes this year, are needed because of growing enrollment and the need to make sure students are properly socially distanced because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Supt. A.J. Johnson said the plan is to turn the west hallway leading up to the old library into a sixth-grade only hallway.

The project is expected to be completed prior to the first day of school, Aug. 17.

Also Monday, High School Principal Cory Uldrich told the Board the Dept. of Education has just announced a new September date for the ACT test.

In the past, the school has dismissed some grades for the day so they would not cause a distraction to the test takers. That is just not going to be practical this year, however, he said. Uldrich said he may look for an alternate site off campus for the juniors to take the test.

In other business, the Board approved new teacher contracts for Uldrich and Elementary School Principal Sarah Edwards.

Both administrators received a 1.6 percent raise. Uldrich will make $99.850 per year under the new contract, while Edwards will make $98,150 with her new contract.

The Board also approved 1.6 percent wage increases for the non-certified staff.

The HNS School Board will next meet at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 10.
