HNS Board agrees to start bowling program
HARTINGTON — Hartington wlll have a school-sponsored bowling team this year.
The Hartington-Newcastle School Board agreed Monday to form a co-op with Cedar Catholic to get a team started here.
Cedar Catholic Principal Chris Uttecht said his board will take up the matter at its Aug. 20 meeting.
Monday’s action was taken even though few details have been set up as to who might be interested in being part of a team, who will coach the team, when they will practice, or who they will even compete against.
The decision to field a team had to be made now because the Nebraska School Activities Association has a Sept. 1 deadline for schools to make their intentions known for all winter sports.
Hartington has had a high school team for many years, but until now, it has not been a school-sanctioned activity. The Nebraska School Activities Association voted earlier this year to sanction the sport, bringing it under the auspices of the NSAA.
Also Monday, the Board held an Americanism Committee Hearing as required by the state.
The annual student fees, parental involvement and bullying policy hearings were also examined and approved for the new school year with no changes.
The Board also renewed its annual contract with school nurse Jackie Freeman. Freeman had been working with the Hartington-Newcastle, Crofton and Bloomfield school districts.
This year she will expand her work here from one and one-half to two days a week and will also work two days a week at Bloomfield. Crofton decided not to renew their portion of the contract, however, and will use a different service.
The Board also re-appointed Russ Flamig as the School Vehicle Inspector. He also serves as the Transporation coordinator.
In another annual start-of-the-new-year move, the board also agreed to transfer some funds from the general fund. The Board gave approval to transfer $50,000 to the school activities account and $100,000 to the school depreciation account.
