Henry J. “Hank” Suing

YANKTON, S.D. — Henry J. “Hank” Suing, 92, Yankton, S.D., formerly of St. Helena, died July 1, 2019, at Avera Sister James Nursing Home, Yankton, S.D.

Visitation and a Vigil Service were Friday, at Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church, St. Helena, and continued Saturday, one hour prior to services.

Mass of Christian Burial was July 6 at Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church, with the Rev. An Duy Phan officiating.

Burial was at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, rural St. Helena.

Pallbearers were Richard Suing, Nic Moore, Chris Tramp, Matt Heimes, Nathan Tramp, Justin Suing, Jason Suing, Chris Suing, John Suing and Andy Suing.

Honorary pallbearers were all of Henry’s grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Henry Joseph Suing was born Aug. 28, 1926, in St. Helena, to Hugo and Anna (Wortmann) Suing. He grew up in the St. Helena area and attended country school and the Sisters Catholic School, St. Helena. Henry helped his parents on the farm until he married Darlene Mary Lammers Aug. 9, 1948, in Bow Valley. Hank and Darlene were blessed with 11 children. Hank continued to farm his entire life until into his late 70s. Darlene died Jan. 12, 1984, at the age of 52. Henry then married Georgine M. (Varilek) Kubal Aug. 10, 1985, in Tyndall, S.D. They moved to St. Helena in 1992 and then to Yankton, S.D., in 2012.

Hank was a member of Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church and served on the District 82 & 57 school boards. He was a member of the St. Helena Social Club, loved to hunt deer and coyotes, fishing, and playing cards. Hank loved horses and always considered himself a cowboy.

Henry J. is survived by his wife, Georgine, Yankton, S.D.; ten children and spouses, Shirley (Melvin) Heimes, Wynot; Bob (Pat) Suing, Crofton; Bill (Diane) Suing, Fordyce; Jim (Mary) Suing, St. Helena; Tom (Maggie) Suing, Fredericksburg, Texas; Betty (Myron) Tramp, Crofton; Ruthie (Bob) Moore, Scotland, S.D.; Sue (Merle) Tramp, Crofton; Don (Kathy) Suing, Yankton, S.D.; Chuck and fiancé, Caroline Sullivan, Laurel; six step-children and spouses, Jerome Kubal, Carrington, N.D.; Julie (Owen) Spurrell, Davis, S.D.; Patty (Mark) Konrad, Yankton, S.D.; Peggy Livingston, Pierre, S.D.; Karen (Dave) Edler. Yankton, S.D.; Roger (Janell) Kubal, Lincoln; 65 grandchildren; 87 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; four sisters, Jeanette Lammers, Joyce Albrecht, Margaret Schmidt, Rosemary Guenther; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Suing and Joan Suing; sisters-in-law and brothers-inlaw, Margaret (Jim) Kniffen, Marce (Steve) Wold, Rosemary (Leroy) Bender, Mary Jo Bauder, Joe (Teri) Varilek.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Darlene Suing; daughter, Mary Suing; daughter-in-law, Cindy Suing (Chuck’s wife); granddaughter, Amy Suing; great-grandsons, Kaleb Heimes and Gerald Osborn; two brothers, Cyril and Gerald Suing; and six brothers-in-law, Donovan Lammers, Floyd Albrecht, Stanley Schmidt, Clarence Guenther, Jim Varilek and Edmund Bauder.
