Cedar girls  sweep E / PJ Wolfpack

PIERCE — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans got back to basics Saturday.

Cedar’s precision offense was firing on all cylinders as the Lady Trojans earned an emphatic three-set sweep over Elgin Public/Pope John (25-21, 25-21, 25-19). 

Cedar, 17-13, will now enter the State Tournament as the seventh seed.

The District title win came only days after losing the SubDistrict title on its home court against rivals Hartington-Newcastle.

Cedar Coach Denae Buss said her team played up to its potential Saturday.

“The key to our success was really having a sense of confidence,” Buss said. “The girls did not get shaken by anything, they just got back to work.” 

The team did the fundamentals well, Buss said.

“We passed really well, which allowed us to run a lot of different things on offense, and the setters made good choices and set the hitters up for success,” she said. “Everyone took care of their jobs.”

The Wolfpack started strong Saturday, building a 7-4 lead before Cedar began to turn things around. The rally began with a Brynn Wortmann tip kill, then she put a power shot down through the heart of the Elgin defense. Three Laney Kathol kills and a Makenna Noecker kill then knotted the game at 12-12.

Gracie Dickes put Cedar in the lead for the first time with a kill of her own.

Dickes said returning to State is a big deal for a group that struggled at times with a new lineup.

Wynot stops Exeter-Milligan

SCHUYLER — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils earned their third straight trip to the State Tournament Saturday.

Wynot, 18-4, claimed the District title Saturday with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21) over Exeter-Milligan to follow up a dominant SubDistrict performance last week.

The team struggled in its first set, but were able to rebound well, said Coach Tammy Wieseler. 

“We had some ups and downs during our District match which caused us to play tentative,” Wieseler said. “This prevented us from running our offense like we wanted to.”

Karley Heimes led the team to the big win with her solid play at the net and in the back court. Heimes led the team with 19 kills. She also paced the defense with 21 digs.

The Wynot offense was again set up by Edyn Sudbeck and Chloe Heimes. Sudbeck dished out 26 set assists, while Heimes had 10.

Amber Lawson was a real force at the net slamming back six blocks to aid the Blue Devil defense.

Heimes was also deadly at the service line firing off three ace serves. Edyn Sudbeck also fared well at the service, line with two aces serves.

“Karley Heimes really had a good District game for us.  Edyn Sudbeck and Autumn Lawson also played well at the net,” Wieseler said.“One of our weaknesses was we struggled passing in our district tournament.”
