Hawks vs. Wildcats

WINSIDE — On Monday, Jan. 22, the Osmond-Randolph Hawks traveled to Winside to play a game originally scheduled for Jan. 16. In a rematch of the firstround Holiday Tournament matchup in which the Hawks won 57-32, Winside was able to flip the script and come away with a 47-41 victory, riding mostly on a 16-0 run that spanned over half of the third quarter and spilled into the fourth.

Winside improved to 5-7 on the season as the Hawks fell to 3-10.

Xander Brown and Hunter Buchanan led the Hawks in scoring with 10 apiece, while Brown ended up one rebound shy of a double-double with 9 in the loss. Logan Lienemann came next with 9 points, all of which came on fourth-quarter 3-point baskets. Baylen Guenther scored 5 points, while fellow senior Owen Severson scored 3. OSMOND — The Hawks had no time to stew on their loss to Winside, as the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (LCC) Bears came calling for a home game in Randolph the very next night, Jan. 23.

There were no weary legs for the Hawks, as they came out firing and rode some timely 3-point shooting and Shearer post moves inside to a 27-20 halftime lead. At one point, the Hawks led by 13 at 45-32 late in the third.

The pesky Bears hung around and drilled some big shots down the stretch, and despite having numerous opportunities, the Hawks couldn’t seal the deal. It was tied 56-56 at the end of regulation and it took overtime to decide things.

O-R took the lead in OT first on a layup by Brown, but the lead was shortlived, as the Bears finally broke through and won the game, 63-59. It was a hard-fought battle by the Hawk boys, but ultimately came up one point short of sealing the victory.

O-R fell to 3-11 as the LCC Bears improved to 10-5 on the season.

Brown led the way with 16 points, while Brayden Shearer played a monster of a game, netting a 16-point/10-rebound double-double on the night. Severson joined his senior classmates in double figures with 10 points. Buchanan had 9 points, while Lienemann hit a pair of 3’s for 6 points of his own. Engel scored 2 to finish out the scoring. Guenther was a force on the glass and on offense making plays for others. While he didn’t score, he did pull down 6 rebounds and dished out 5 assists in the heartbreaking loss.

PLAINVIEW — Thursday night, Jan. 25, Osmond-Randolph traveled to Plainview to take on the 9-5 Plainview Pirates. The Hawks put together a great first-half effort to take a 27-22 lead into the halftime locker room.

O-R then got blitzed out of the gate in the third quarter as Plainview cranked up the pressure and turned the Hawks over a multitude of times. Plainview’s lead would swell to as many as 15, and they ultimately came away with a 65-51 victory. O-R had trouble handling the full-court press in the second half, which led to many, many turnovers.

Brown led the way with 16 yet again, while Shearer netted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Lienemann came next with 8 points. Severson came next with 5, followed by Engel with 4, Guenther with 3, and Harder with 2. Buchanan scored 1 point in the loss.
