Hawks drop season opener

Posted in:

OSMOND — On Thursday, Nov. 30, the Cardinals from O’Neill St. Mary’s came calling in the first regular season game of the 202324 basketball season, and left town with a 66-49 win.

The Randolph-Osmond Hawks scored first out of the gate, but OSM held the lead 13-8 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, they opened up their lead to 35-18 going into the half.

The game would be played even the rest of the way, as both teams scored 31 points in the second half to reach the final tally of 66-49. The Hawks struggled to convert on numerous shots close to the basket, and turned the ball over 21 times in the loss.

Sophomore Logan Lienemann exploded off the bench to lead the way with 17 points, on an impressive 5 of 8 from beyond the three-point arc. Next came Owen Severson with 12, who also tied for the team lead in rebounds with Xander Brown and Brayden Shearer, all with six.

Luke Harder scored eight points and Hunter Buchanan knocked down two three-pointers for six points. Brown, Dayton Winkelbauer, and Ryan Engel each scored two to round out the scoring. Engel and Baylen Guenther did a good job of finding open teammates and getting them the ball, as they each dished out four assists in the loss.

The Hawks will face off against two tough Lewis & Clark Conference opponents this week, as they travel to Ponca (2-0) Thursday, Dec. 7, and then come home to square off against Wynot (2-0) the next night in Randolph.
