Posted in:

RANDOLPH — On Dec. 29 and 30, the Osmond-Randolph Hawks competed in the Randolph Holiday Tournament, and brought home the silver medal after defeating the Winside Wildcats and falling to the Stuart Broncos.

Hawks vs. Wildcats

The Hawks (1-5) opened against the Winside Wildcats (2-5) and came out of the gates with some hot shooting and a solid fullcourt press to jump out to a 21-11 lead after one quarter. The Wildcats closed the gap to as close as six points in the second quarter, but O-R finished the period on an 8-0 run, capped by a Logan Lienemann three-pointer as the first half buzzer sounded to carry a 3016 lead into the locker room. Osmond-Randolph extended their lead in each of the final two quarters and got their second win of the season by a score of 57-32.

Lienemann led the very well-rounded offensive attack with 12 points, sinking four shots from beyond the arc. Next came Owen Severson with 10; he also swiped six steals from Winside.

Freshman Ryan Engel came next with eight points on just five shot attempts, and Xander Brown scored seven points while leading the team with nine rebounds. Hunter Buchanan and Luke Harder each scored six points. Brayden Shearer scored four points while Baylen Guenther and freshman Brecken Shearer each scored two to round out the scoring.

The Hawks moved the ball very well against Winside’s length, dishing out 15 assists as a team on 23 made field goals while only turning the ball over 10 times.

The Stuart Broncos beat the Niobrara/ Verdigre Cougars on the first day of the tournament as well, and brought their 7-3 record into the championship game against the 2-5 hometown Hawks. Their aggressive defense and team speed caused O-R major problems early on, as they took a 17-0 lead before the Hawks managed to get on the scoreboard.

O-R stabilized after the first quarter deficit of 20-3, but still only managed to hold that deficit, trailing 34-17 into the halftime break. On the first possession of the third quarter, Osmond Randolph got great ball movement and multiple good shots, as nearly three minutes came off the game clock while they continued to get offensive rebounds and create more good shots.

The possession finally capped with Buchanan knocking down a triple from the top of the key, and it kicked off an 8-0 Hawks run to draw the deficit to within nine with 2:18 remaining in the third quarter. Then the pressure defense of the Broncos started to cause O-R fits again, and Stuart won the game, 53-31.

Buchanan became the sixth Hawk to lead the team in scoring in a game this season in their eight games, scoring nine points on 3/5 three-point shots. Next came Engel and Brayden Shearer with five points each, followed by Brown and Lienemann with three each. Rounding out the scoring with two points each were Harder, Severson, and senior Matthew Alderson.

The Osmond-Randolph Hawks season continued against the Cedar Catholic Trojans (63) in a home game in Randolph on Tuesday. Also this week, O-R will take on the Niobrara/ Verdigre Cougars (0-10) on Friday, Jan.

5, in the Wausa Post-Holiday Tournament. They will then play either Wausa (5-4) or Lutheran High Northeast (11-0) on Saturday, Jan. 6, depending on the outcomes of the first games.
