Gerald E. Foxhoven

CROFTON — Gerald E. Foxhoven, 92, Crofton, died Feb. 28, 2020, at Avera Majestic Bluffs, Yankton, S.D.

Mass of Christian Burial was March 3, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Constance, with the Rev. Jim Keiter officiating.

Burial was at St. Joseph’s cemetery, Constance, with military rites by the Crofton American Legion Post #128.

Visitation and a Vigil service were Monday at church. Visitation continued Tuesday, one hour prior to services at church. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton.

Pallbearers were Brock Foxhoven, Justin Foxhoven, Jason Babcock, Trent Schieffer, Travis Jueden, Tyler Jueden, Brandon Miller, and Austin Miller.

Honorary pallbearers were the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and Jackie Wieseler.

Gerald was born Jan. 23, 1928, in Crofton, to Henry and Veronica (Feldhacker) Foxhoven. He grew up in Crofton and attended elementary school there. Gerald later received his high school diploma in 2002 because he started farming full-time at the age of 15, after his father died. He was drafted into the U.S. Army Feb. 28, 1951, until July 14, 1952, at which time he was honorably discharged due to his mother’s terminal illness. He married Ruth Ann Wortmann Sept. 7, 1955, in Bow Valley. Gerald continued to farm with his brother, Art, raising livestock and grain and milking cows. Gerald also worked on the construction of Gavin’s Point Dam.

Gerald was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Hartington VFW Post #5283 and Crofton American Legion Post 128. He liked to play cards and listen to the Crofton baseball games on the radio.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Ruth, Crofton; five children and spouses, Galen (Brenda) Foxhoven, Crofton; Janel (Dale) Sudbeck, Crofton; Gerri (Pat) Feilmeier, Hartington; Sherry Schieffer, Crofton; and Jeanine (Shane) Miller, Farmington, Ark.; 17 grandchildren, two step grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, one step greatgrandchild; seven siblings, Angeline Ryan, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Beatrice Poppe, Crofton; JoAnn (Ray) Poppe, Crofton; Damian Foxhoven, Wapakonete, Ohio; Daniel (Fran) Foxhoven Weslaco, Texas; Darlene (Konrad) Maibaum, Crofton; Joseph Foxhoven, Crofton; sisters-in-law, Dolores Foxhoven, Yankton, S.D.; Arlene Foxhoven, Bloomingdale, Ohio.

Preceding Gerald in death were his parents, infant son, Billy Joe; son-in-law, Galen Jueden; granddaughter, Marie Foxhoven; sister, Roseline Gubbels; brothers, Art and Henry; brothers-in-law, Don Ryan, John Poppe, Louis “Doc” Gubbels; and sister-in-law, Vivian Foxhoven.
