Friday’s Wildcat game is up in the air

Posted in:

HARTINGTON - Even though Hartington-Newcastle has been cleared to play football again after being forced to take two weeks off because of the coronavirus, the Wildcats may not face an opponent this Friday.

They are scheduled to host the Plainview Pirates at Russ Hochstein Field, but Plainview High School won't be able to compete because that community is in the midst of a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Classes were cancelled at Plainview High School Wednesday so the building could be disinfected.

"Despite our best efforts, we’re experiencing a spike in positive cases and quarantines among both students and staff in the HS building….so much so that we have to take some serious measures in our high school building to curtail the spread, said Plainview Supt. Arlt. "While we don’t know the origin of the spread, we have to make some assumption that our high school building is a source of spread. As a result, we are keeping 7th-12th grade students home so that we can conduct a thorough disinfecting of the building."

Hartington-Newcastle school officials have put calls out looking for a new opponent to compete against Friday.
