Freshman saves the day for Blue Devils

WINNEBAGO - The Wynot Blue Devils fell behind in the first half of the game against the Winnebago Indians but rallied in the third quarter and pulled off the big come from behind 63-62 win on a last second three pointer by freshman Dylan Heine to steal the victory on Friday night.

Both teams had multiple chances to pad their leads in the game but each struggled from the free throw line. Winnebago going 9-19 with the Blue Devils ending with 12-20 charity tosses.

Charlie Schroeder was Wynot’s go-to guy in this matchup as he worked the low post for a gamehigh 20 points and 10 rebounds. Anthony Haberman ran the point guard position and finished with 17 points.

Winnebago got balanced scoring as well withAnthony Earth leading the way with 16 points. Kellen Crossbear hit a trio of 3-pointers on his way to 15 points and Caleb Kearnes helped the Indians cause with his 13 points.

In the first quarter Wynot got seven quick points from Anthony Haberman and a trey by Dylan Heine. Winnebago got a pair of three pointers by Caleb Kearnes, one by Kellen Crossbear and a pair of conventional baskets by Asaias Bernie as the Indians roared to a 19-12 early lead.

Wynot tried to rally in the second quarter with five more points by Haberman, a trey by Peyton Wieseler and a pair of buckets in close by Charlie Schroeder. Winnebago held them off with five more points by Caleb Kearnes and buckets by Gabe Bassette and Dyami Berridge as they remained up 34-27 at halftime.

Wynot would rally in the third quarter. Charlie Schroeder would dominate at the low post pouring in 12 big points.

Wynot also got contributions from their bench as Zack Foxhoven, Colin Wieseler and Jack Kuchta all hit baskets and Wynot went on a 25-12 run overtaking the Indians to build a 52-46 lead with one quarter left.

Winnebago would not fold as they rallied in the fourth quarter. Five more points byAnthony Earth and a trey by Dyami Berridge cut Wynot’s lead to one point.

Trystan Heimes’ hit the front end of a one-and-one to put Wynot back up by two points, but Kellen Crossbear hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Indians a one-point lead.

The Blue Devils turned the ball over and were forced to foul on their next possession. Anthony Earth hit the front end of the oneand-one to give Winnebago a two point lead with 11 seconds to play. Coach Heimes then called his final time out to set up a play.

The Blue Devils ran Dylan Heine off a double screen and the freshman calmly drained the three pointer from the right wing as time expired to give the Devils the exciting 63-62 win.
