Former Husker fires up local athletes, boosters

Posted in:

HARTINGTON - For the second time in 2018, former Husker and current motivational speaker Demoine Adams came to speak to a school.

Back in the spring, Adams spoke at Hartington-Newcastle, on Friday he spoke at the Cedar Catholic Booster Club Kickoff and partly talked about how his faith helped make him a leader on the field.

Looking up at the walls in the Msgr. Warner Center, Adams noticed one of his favorite scriptures up on the wall. Philippians 4:13.

“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”

Adams talked about how his faith helped make him a good person on and off the field, allowing him to make the right decisions despite the temptations of college being all around him.

“Actions follow beliefs,” was a recurring phrase during the night.

He also mentioned a “training table” throughout his speech. He did not mean it in the sense of being taped up for a game, but rather, how a person trains sets the table for how they perform.

Adams speech was not just directed at the students either. He told a story about his first time watching a Husker game from the stands at Memorial Stadium. Having been a former player, Adams always was able to watch from the sidelines. He related to the fan experience, but mentioned his surprise at the comments he heard from fans during rough parts of the game.

Then, he noticed one group that was still smiling and cheering for the team despite the negativity from the crowd. The cheerleaders. Adams talked about how the student-athletes needed more cheerleaders than fans. How the parents and community in the crowd need to help lift up a team during the rough times.

“No one feels worse about a loss or poor play than the players and coaches.”

He continued the analogy by talking about the negativity on social media and the current climate these students are in compared to when parents went to school. He spoke on loving one another and supporting each other as a community.

Adams received a standing ovation after his speech. It was followed by some raffle giveaways of Husker tickets, Cedar Catholic apparel, and more.

Teams kickoff their seasons this week.
