Expos fall to 1-5 on the year

Posted in:

WYNOT — The Wynot Expos dropped to 1-5 in this early part of the South Central League baseball season with two defeats last week.

The Expos were defeated by the Freeman Black Sox, 17-4, and fell 10-4 against the Yankton Lakers.

The Expos were supposed to host the Crofton Bluejays Sunday evening, but that game was washed out.

The team is still working out some kinks said Wynot player-coach Lee Heimes.

“We are playing good defense, some games we are pitching well, some games we are hitting well,” Heimes said. “We have not put it all together at one time. The league is a very competitive league, if you don’t bring it every time you play you will get beat. Consistency is very important.

Heimes is not worried, though. He said the team is quickly gaining experience.

“We have a lot of games coming up and they are at home, so hopefully, we can capitalize on them. We are improving. We need to keep working at refining our skills and go have fun playing baseball with our team.”

In the defeat at Freeman, Dawson Sudbeck went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and Heimes went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and an RBI.

Against Yankton, Scott Morrison was 2-for-2 with two runs, while Heimes was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

It will be a busy week as Wynot played host to the Yankton Tappers on Tuesday, and hosts the Lakers Thursday night and then welcomes Freeman to the Expos’ home confines Friday.

They wrap the week with a non-league game at Dimock-Emory Saturday.

CROFTON — The Crofton Bluejays split their last two games.

The Bluejays lost, 7-2, at the Yankton Tappers last week, before bouncing back with a 4-0 home opening win over Scotland on Thursday.

The Bluejays played Tuesday against Tabor and will host Menno Thursday and play the host Yankton Lakers on Sunday.

Corey Roach had two hits against the Tappers, while Lathan Maibaum recorded two base knocks with two RBI and Austin Hegge scored three times in the Crofton (3-4) win over Scotland.

“We are starting to get up to speed in terms of at bats for hitters and innings on the mound for pitchers,” Crofton coach Ben Hegge said. “With a big home stretch on the horizon here in the second half, now is a great time to start getting some momentum.”
