Eleanor Ann Herse Rogers

SPRINGFIELD, Va. — Eleanor Ann Herse Rogers, 92, Springfield, Va., died July 17, 2020, in Springfield, Va.

A Memorial service will be held at a future date at Providence Presbyterian Church, Fairfax, Va.

The burial will be for family only and is still being determined. Ann was born in Laurel, to Richard Lee Herse and Myra Eleanor Smith Herse March 30, 1928. She graduated from Laurel High School in June 1946, and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in June 1950. She married Robert Paul Rogers Dec. 22, 1950, in Laurel.

She was a lifelong homemaker and community service and church volunteer, and did work in the medical technology field for a few years after graduating from college. Along with her husband and children, she lived in San Diego, Calif.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Las Vegas, Nev,; Culver City and Santa Monica, Calif.; Lincoln; Mentor, Ohio; and Springfield, Va.

Ann was a charter member of Providence Presbyterian Church, Fairfax, Va., where she served as an Elder, Deacon, Bible study leader, Sunday School teacher, played piano for worship services when the church was newly formed, and served on various committees to further the church in outreach and service. She participated in and supported many Presbyterian churches in each city where she lived.

She also volunteered for several community service organizations. She was on the Board of Directors for Pathway Homes and Psychiatric Rehabilitative Services in Fairfax County, Va., and served as the Board President of Pathway Homes for a two-year term. She was a driver, food deliverer, and phone captain for FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help) and a food deliverer for Food and Friends. She played the piano for sing-a-longs at several adult day care centers and nursing homes. She also served as a Girl Scout leader when her daughters were in elementary school.

Ann enjoyed spending her leisure time playing bridge with many bridge groups. She was a lover of books and was a member of the Providence Readers book club. She was an excellent cook and cookie baker and enjoyed preparing meals and inviting the entire family over for dinner. Her favorite leisure time activity was spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren. Ann was a resident of Greenspring Village/Garden Ridge, a senior living community, for the past 14 years. While living there, she helped start the Nebraska Lunch Society, participated in bridge and Scrabble groups, and attended religious group discussions, Greenspring Players plays, and many musical concerts.

Ann is preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Paul Rogers; her parents, Richard Lee Herse and Myra Eleanor Smith Herse; and her brother, Richard Romig Herse.

Ann is survived by her children, Susan Lee Rogers Leyden (Mark Allen Leyden), Paula Ann Rogers, Stephen Paul Rogers (Melissa Jane Bodé Rogers); her sister, Nancy Lee Herse Noren; her sister-in-law, Iris Munter Herse; and her grandchildren, Brant Robert Leyden (Anne Carolin Mueller Leyden), Caroline Clare Leyden Johnston (Shaun Thomas Johnston), and Ellen Marie Rogers Casey (Christopher Paul Casey).

Memorials may be directed to Providence Presbyterian Church and the American Red Cross.
