Donald Gene Heitman

COLERIDGE — Donald Gene Heitman, 95, Coleridge, died Sept. 29, 2018, at The Embers, Coleridge. Visitation was Tuesday at the church, and will continue one hour prior to services Wednesday. Funeral Services will be Oct. 3, at 10:30 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Coleridge, with the Rev. Russ Lambert officiating. Burial will be at the Lawn Ridge Cemetery, Coleridge, with military rites provided by the Coleridge American Legion Post #114. Pallbearers will be Dennis Heitman, Anthony Heitman, Cole Heitman, Dakota Heitman, Brady Heitman, Kobe Heitman and Larry Jansen. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Coleridge. Donald Gene was born Aug. 3, 1923, in Laurel, to Henry Ernest and Gesena (Post) Heitman. He has lived in the Coleridge area all his life. He graduated from Coleridge High School in 1941, and served in the U.S. Army from March 16, 1943-Jan. 6, 1946. He married Betty Ellen Dewey Aug. 14, 1947, in Coleridge. Don worked as a bookkeeper at Great Plains Supply Company, Coleridge, from 1953-1982. Donald was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he served as a Deacon and was on various committees within the church. He was a member of the Hartington VFW Post 5283 and the Coleridge American Legion Post 114. He served the American Legion as a former Treasurer for many years. Don was also a former Town Board member and a Volunteer Fireman. Don is survived by his son, Dennis, and fiancé, Lisa Schlumbohm, Coleridge; a sister, Winifred (Warren) Janssen, Randolph; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty, March 30, 2018; five brothers, Henry Ernest Heitman Jr., Lyle Heitman, Gayle Heitman, Claire Heitman and Wendell Heitman; three sisters, Alice Kunzman, Velma (Darrell) Nordby and Leona (Wilfred) Hansen; step mother, Elsie Heitman; half-sister, Sue Yerger; and half-brother, John Heitman.
