Defense lifts Wynot girls to first-round win

LINCOLN — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils began their run to defend their D2 state title Thursdayby taking on the Lady Raiders from Lawrence-Nelson.

The game started out as a competitive contest in the early going, but the Lady Blue Devils’ relentless full-court pressure began to wear down the Lady Raiders as Wynot pulled away in the second half for a 48-39 win.

Karley Heimes was the spark for the Lady Blue Devils as the sophomore came off the bench to account for agame high 19 points. Katelyn Heine continues her steady play and also hit double figures with her 11-point effort.

Lawrence-Nelson was led by Allison Miller who hit a trio of 3-pointers in the game and finished with a 14-point performance. Emily Miller and Taylor Harrington each had five points for the Lady Raiders.

In the opening quarter, Wynot got five points from Karley Heimes and buckets by Shaelee Planer and Autumn Lawson to earn a slim 13-12 lead. Lawrence Nelson was led by five points from Annie McCartney and a trey by Allison Miller.

In the second quarter, the Lady Raiders got five more points from Allison Miller, but that was all the offense they could muster. Wynot did not do much better, as they got two more fieldgoals on the inside by Karley Heimes and an offensive rebound and put back by Whitney Hochstein to take a 21-17 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The two teams stayed competitive in the third quarter as the Lady Raiders got five points from Taylor Harrington and another trey by Allison Miller.

Wynot countered with a pair of 3-pointers from the top of the key by Katelyn Heine and one by Michaela Lange from the left corner to make the score 33-27 going into the final period.

Wynot would stretch out their lead in the fourth quarter with a pair of 3-pointers by Karley Heimes and some solid free throw shooting.

Lawrence-Nelson got a third 3-pointer from Allison Miller but it wasn’t enough to keep the Blue Devils from the 48-39 win.
