YANKTON, S.D. — Darold Joseph Haberman, 70, Yankton, S.D., died May 23, 2019, at Avera Sister James, Yankton, surrounded by his family and friends.

Darold was born Jan. 23, 1949, at Sacred Hospital, Yankton, to Anthony Martin and Leona Elizabeth (Lange) Haberman. His life was full of an abundance of love, fun, and hard work being part of a family of 11 kids on a dairy farm near Menominee. Darold attended grade school in Menominee, graduated from Yankton High School, served in the South Dakota Army National Guard, and attended the University of South Dakota-Springfield.

His first career was working as a journeyman electrician for Bauer Electric. During this time, he met and married Jerilyn “Jerri” Langle at Sacred Heart Church, Yankton. Darold was offered a position at Chicago Rawhide Industries, Springfield, S.D., as facility manager. He enjoyed working for CR for almost 30 years. After the plant closed, Darold worked for Thompson Electric as a journeyman electrician. His final career was at the City of Yankton Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Darold and Jerri were blessed with three children: Susan (Sealey), Adam, and Anne (Zoellner). Darold was actively involved in his children’s 4-H clubs. He enjoyed being a chaperone on his kids’ school outings. Darold had nothing, but welcoming arms for his sons-in-law, Bill and Darin, daughter-in-law, Laura, and his granddaughter, Tatum. He looked forward to the birth of each grandchild.

Darold’s faith in God was shown through his involvement in St. Benedict Catholic Church, where he served as Eucharistic Minister, Funeral Usher Chairman, and was an active participate of daily Mass. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus organizing charity and social events and enjoyed working Cursillo weekends with great passion.

Darold enjoyed fixing tractors and giving rides to his grandkids, walking around the fairs and enjoying a cold one (or two) at the beer gardens in between 4-H shows, putting up hay for the horses, woodworking, riding horses, sharing his carpentry skills, attending church, touring Nebraskan country roads, cheering on the grandkids in sports activities, playing games (with great passion) with family and friends making sure that everyone followed “Darold’s Rules,” sitting on the patio, having breakfast with his Cursillo men’s group, and analyzing and trying to figure out how to make things better.
