Crofton tops Wynot in SCL battle

Posted in:

WYNOT — The Expos are now 4-4 on the season in the South Central League.

Wynot started last week with a 12-11 loss to the Yankton Lakers and then bounced back a few days later to beat Lesterville, 13-9.

Wynot dropped a 4-0 home decision to Crofton Sunday night.

The Lakers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal the win over the Expos.

“Defensively we had a few errors in the game that gave them some runs,” Expos coach Lee Heimes said. “We scored a lot of runs but we needed to make a few more plays on defense and pitching needed to be better.”

Against Lesterville, the Expos reversed the trend with a four-run outburst in the ninth to pull away in a back-and-forth game.

“We did a good job of putting the ball in play and they made some mistakes defensively which we capitalized on and scored some runs,” Heimes said. “We played error-free baseball defensively and made plays for our pitchers. I like how we are starting to get ahead of other teams early and putting pressure on them.”

Heimes said the Expos’ pitching is also improving.

“Our pitchers are becoming more consistent and throwing strikes and going deeper into games,” he said.

The Expos played the Yankton Tappers on Tuesday.

“I like how we are getting better in every facet of the game,” Heimes said. “We just need to continue to be more consistent in everything we do. We are almost halfway through our season, and we are in the middle of the standings in the South Central League.”
