COVID shuts Wynot down for two weeks

Posted in:

WYNOT — Wynot Public School has closed its doors to students and staff until Oct. 5.

On Sept. 23, the administration at Wynot Public Schools was informed that a student had tested positive for COVID-19.

The student was a member of several large sub-groups, leading school administrators to implement virtual learning for grades 7-12 effective Sept. 28-Oct. 5.

“Although not every student was directly exposed to the student, a large enough percentage was that we felt the safest thing to do was quarantine each of these grade levels,” said Supt. Jeffery Messersmith.

During this time frame, all in-person practices for sports and activities have been cancelled and an attempt will be made to reschedule all competitions.

During this 14-day quarantine period, students in grades 7-12 are connecting virtually for all their core classes, college classes and online classes.

Classes that will not meet include Art, Band, Choir, PE and FCS.

Wynot football coach Steve Heimes said they are trying to make do the best they can.

“We had all the players take their equipment home with them so they could clean everything, but also so they could put it on for conditioning at home,” he said. “Hopefully, they won’t get sore when we get back to football,”

Heimes said workouts should continue, as well.

“We have made workouts online for them to do while they are at home,” he said.

His team is also being asked to do its best to scout its upcoming foes.

“They are all supposed to be watching film on HUDL on ourselves and future opponents so we can be ready when we get back to football,” he said. “There is not much else we can do besides prepare and clean.”
