County may place new signs to make county roads safer

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — Some county roads could soon get some safety upgrades.

Cedar County Commissioners were told at their regular Feb. 25 meeting that several additional curve signs and recommended speed limits around those curves are being considered.

Road Supt. Carla Schmidt visited with the board on the possible placement of these curve signs at some current and new locations.

She will be working on this in the coming months along with the road crews to identify priority sharp curves and corners where additional signage should be considered.

Discussion was then held on road and bridge projects for the future. In particular is the stretch of road, Rd. 568 just north of 893 Rd. Section 3 Precinct 5 to possibly close the road. The board directed Schmidt to do a study of this road and report back to the commissioners with her recommendation. If it is recommended the road be closed, a public road closing hearing will be announced and take place.

Zoning Administrator Tim Gobel presented a building permit for Ty and Eric Becker for a 480’ X 740’ cattle shed that will be open on one side in Precinct 9. The permit was approved as presented. Another permit was presented and approved for Eric Pearson to build a 20’ X 40’ building with a 12’ X 40’ lean-to in Precinct 18.

Shirley Kraemer then met with the board to discuss the possible placement of a memorial bench in honor of long-time County Commissioner Marlen Kraemer who recently passed away.

He had served as County Commissioner in District 2 for 28 years. She said she will pay all the expenses for the bench and its placement. The concrete bench color would complement the courthouse and annex. The county commissioners agreed to consider the request and they will meet with her again in two weeks at the next meeting with their decision.

Bid quotes were then opened for lawn care for the courthouse lawn and grounds for this year. A motion was made by Tramp and seconded by Bartels to award the bid to Y & Y Lawn of Laurel to handle the lawn fertilizing and weed control and to X-Pert Lawn & Landscaping to mow and trim the lawn. County Clerk Dave Dowling will notify each bidder of the board’s decision.

Lastly, before the bills were approved for payment, Commissioner McGregor reported to the board on the recent meetings he attended on Area of Aging and Region IV North Star Mental Health.

With no further business on the agenda, the meeting was adjourned. The next Commissioner’s meeting will take place at the Courthouse Board Room at 8:30 a.m. March 10.
