County looks at safety, appoints new member to Veterans' Committee

HARTINGTON — Cedar County Commissioners talked about safety, made a Veteran’s Board appointment, and discussed County Zoning and building permits at their Dec. 11 meeting.

Chairman Dave McGregor opened the meeting at 8:30 a.m. with commissioners Craig Bartels, Terry Pinkelman and commissioner-elect Chris Tramp present.

Cedar County Zoning and Weed Supt. Dave Sudbeck informed the Commission on one new build-
ing permit, a 20 X 40-foot cabin with a 16 X 32-foot garage for Pat Hoesing. There was some question about its location, Sudbeck will go out to inspect the building site.

McGregor said with the election of a new County Surveyor, there is some discussion about him taking over as Zoning Superintendent.

Tim Gobel was elected to the post in November. Prior to Gobel’s election, no one had run for the office for several years, so an area surveyor had usually been appointed.

With Gobel on the County team, now, he might be able to assist with zoning and building permits, Commissioners said.

Also Tuesday, Cedar County Road Supt. Carla Schmidt presented one underground boring location for Cedar Knox Public Power in District One. There was some question on its location and whether it was located in Cedar County. Schmidt will contact CKP- PD to verify location.

She also presented a $2,000 grant check from the Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Association, NIRMA used for purchasing Type Three Barricades.

Also Tuesday, a discussion was held on purchasing safety clothing for the road crews,

District three employees have ordered theirs, other districts have been contacted for their orders. When the operators are out of their vehicles and equipment, this safety clothing should be worn at all times, Schmidt said.

Schmidt also updated Commissioners on the most recent county safety meeting.

It was recommended that a safety representative is chosen from each district to attend quarterly safety meetings with the Road Superintendent having minutes available to be taken back to each shop.

Employees are then expected

to read the minutes and then sign off that they read and understood what the discussion was about at the safety meetings. The next safety meeting is scheduled for March.

In other action, Veteran’s Service Officer Scott Stanton addressed the Commissioners on the new Veteran Committee member.

Reggie Cook had turned in his resignation with Stanton recommending Joe Zimmerman to take Cook’s place on the Committee.

Motion by Bartels, seconded by Pinkelman to accept Joe Zimmer- man as the new Veteran’s Committee member, Motions Carried 3-0 vote.

Schmidt and McGregor met with Robert Elliot to discuss the trees in and along the Right of Way going to and from a new bridge to be installed near his place.

Commissioners also discussed closing the County Extension office between Christmas and New Year’s because of low office visits during that time of the year,
