Conference tourney action is set to begin

Posted in:

HNS and Wynot enter Lewis and Clark Tourney Play Cedar Catholic begins MidState Tourney play

Games this Week: Conference Play begins Saturday vs. TBA

Outlook: Cedar Catholic closed the week at 8-4. The Trojans saw some big performances from Myles and Tate Thoene while Charlie Schroeder also found his groove last week. With numbers coming from multiple directions, the Trojans will remain a scary proposition.

Last week’s results: Beat Creighton, 64-51. Lost to Wayne, 59-49, Beat GACC, 70-43

Coach Matt Steffen Comments: “Creighton is a much improved team with the addition of freshman John Mitchell. He was difficult for us to stop. We switched up our defense in the second half and that seemed to give them some trouble. Charlie had a nice game for us with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

“Wayne’s defense has really improved since we beat them in December. The game was much closer than the score indicates, being 38-37 going into the fourth quarter. We made some bad decisions and took some poor shots in the fourth, but all in all, they outplayed us on the night and the better team won.

“(Against GACC) I thought our kids bounced back from our loss to Wayne and played with a lot of intensity and focus. We played a great game.”

HARTINGTON-NEWCASTLE

Games this Week: Thursday vs. Winside; Saturday conference play vs. TBA

Outlook: The Wildcats are 7-7 and get a chance to make some noise with the start of conference tourney play this week. They will hope to ride the momentum of the Crofton win after the disappointment of the last five minutes against LCC.

Last week’s results: Lose to LCC, 60-53, Beat Crofton, 46-42

Head coach Nick Haselhorst Comments: “Against LCC, we played well for about 27 minutes of the game, but we made some crucial errors down the stretch that decided the outcome. I was proud of our kids and the way they played and responded to some adversity, coming back from a deficit, early in the game.

At Crofton: We found a way to get the win. It was a hardfought and physical game on both sides. We played great defensively and that game is a chance to hang on and be victorious.

“We will look to improve and gain some confidence this week.”

WYNOT

Games this Week:

Thursday vs. Ponca;

Saturday in conference opener, TBA

Outlook: It will be a chance to retune the Blue Devils’ season when conference play tips off this weekend. Ponca is known for its defense and some good offensive pieces.

Last week’s results: Lost to Allen, 42-35, lost to Winnebago, 61-57, in OT

Coach Lee Heimes Comments: “We are getting better each and every game but we need to learn how to finish games. We played Allen close throughout the game. We turned the ball over too many times because of their defense. We had a chance but need to learn how to finish games.

“Against Winnebago, we had the lead and had our chances. We need to hit some free throws down the stretch that we missed. We played good defense in guarding the three pointers but needed to stop the dribble drive better. We are improving and getting better as the season progresses against good teams. We need to learn how to win those games with a young team.”
