Commissioners concerned about damaged, missing road signs

HARTINGTON — Vandalism and theft of road signs in Cedar County is becoming a real problem, Cedar County officials were recently told.

Cedar County Road Dept. Supt. Carla Schmidt told Cedar County Commissioners Sept. 22 that numerous minimum maintenance road signs have been taken or damaged. She said it not only costs the county to repair and replace signs, but it could also be a problems for people driving those roads.

Schmidt also said CPR recertifications were coming due for the road employees and told NIRMA that it would be held in two sessions as only ten people could be in a class.

Discussion was held, on the bridge files in the county, with the Department of Roads hiring a firm to check the files on bridges over 20 feet.

Schmidt also talked about a road agreement for a pipeline near the former Agrex complex in Laurel.

Commissioners also discussed a proposed contract for roads with Haystack dealing with Wayne County wind tower project where Cedar County roads would used to access the Wayne County project.

County Attorney Nick Matney met with the board to discuss the road agreement with Haystack for the wind tower project, he informed the board that a new Dixon County judge is to be appointed, which would allow, Judge Luebe more time to spend in Cedar County.

County Assessor Don Hoesing reported on omitted properties 5494 & 7284.

Tim Gobel, Cedar County Zoning Administrator presented several conditional use permits including Mike Korth’s conditional use permit for a 5-acre split, a 5-acre split for Scott Zavadil and a lot split for Randy Gowery.

He then brought before the board a building permit he’d approved for Mike Korth, on a 38 X 46’ house, one for Allen Witt for a 16 X 32’ boat shed, Mike Heimes’s permit for a 27,000 bushel grain bin, Ramiro Guridi for a 30 X 60’ house, Amber Waterbury for a 12 X 14’ chicken house, Daniel Lammers 16 X 24’ house addition, Jason Arens a 72 X 160’ building and Doug Hahne’s 20 X 30’ building.

Commissioners opened bids for the District Two Bridge Project, with bids opened from Thiesen, Norfolk, NE. for 524,103.44, Herbst, LeMars, IA. For $600, 812.00 and Midwest, Lincoln, NE. with a bid of $704,151.47.

Schmidt said the bids will be reviewed by the engineer with the lowest bidder being notified if their bid meets specifications for the project.

The Transit System hearing was opened to the public as advertised with any questions answered from those attending, regarding to the transit system building, Only the Cedar County News reporter was present, so the transit project will continue forward without objection.

A discussion also held with Randy Hale, Nebraska Machinery, pertaining leasing of a CAT Model 140M3 AWD. Motion to approve the lease made by McGregor and seconded by Bartels to sign a three year-lease for the machine.

With no further business or agenda items, the meeting was declared adjourned.
