Cold shooting dooms Lady Devils in third-place games

Posted in:

LINCOLN — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils and the Mullen Lady Broncos met at Lincoln.

Northeast High School Friday to decide third place in the 2021 State Basketball Tournament.

The Lady Devils would take what they thoughtwas a comfortable lead into the final quarter to only go ice cold and the Lady Broncos would rally to steal away the 30-29 win.

The scoreless fourth quarter was hard to explain as the Lady Blue Devils had pride in finishing their games this year. Free throws would play a big roll in the outcome as Mullen went 11 for 22 while Wynot was an icy 2 for 15 for the game.

Karley Heimes led Wynot and all scorers with 12 points. Mullen was led by Samantha Moore and Shelby Welsh with eight points each.

In the opening quarter the Lady Broncos were held to a single bucket by Shelby Welsh. Wynot got 4 points from Karley Heimes and a basket each from Emersyn Sudbeck, Edyn Sudbeck and Kendra Pinkelman to build an 11-2 early lead.

The second quarter saw a field goal each by Krystal Sudbeck, Emersyn Sudbeck and Amber Lawson for Wynot. Mullen would rally behind five points by Taylor Svoboda and a three pointer by Smantha Moore as the Blue Devils clung to an 18-13 halftime lead.

Karley Heimes drained a pair of three pointers and a conventional basket for eight third-quarter points. Mullen lost ground with two points each from Smantha Moore, Taylor Svoboda and Kylie Licking. Wynot took a 28-20 lead into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter the lid went on the offensive end for the Lady Blue Devils as they did not score from the field and went 0 for 5 from the charity stripe. The Blue Devils tried to use their stall game in the final minutes but Mullen took advantage as they rallied with six big points from Shelby Welch and 5-7 freethrow shooting as a team in the quarter to steal the 30-28 win from the dejected Lady Blue Devils.
