Coaching career brings Becker back home

YANKTON, S.D.— When Jonathon Becker decided to make coaching track his career, he knew he’d have to say goodbye to Northeast Nebraska.

Just a few short years into that career, Becker is already returning home.

He was named Monday as the new Associate Head Track and Field coach at Mt. Marty College in Yankton.

He comes to Mount Marty after a successful coaching stint at MidAmerica Nazarene University.

“We are extremely happy Coach Becker is joining our staff,” Athletic Director Chris Kassin said. “His successful experience as an athlete and as a coach will enhance our growing track and field programs. Being from Hartington, Jonathon is familiar with Mount Marty and shares our mission and values.”

Becker joined MNU track and field staff in the Fall of 2015 after one year coaching at Baker University. As the hurdle and strength and conditioning coach at Baker, he coached three NAIA National qualifiers as well as two first-time qualifiers. Of those qualifiers, one garnered All-America status in the 60-meter hurdles.

Since 2015, Coach Becker has acquired multiple accolades as an Assistant Track and Field Coach at MNU. Becker swept the Indoor and Outdoor Men’s Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year awards in 2017 and was Men’s Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018 as well.

Becker said in an interview Tuesday that he loves coaching because he loves “connecting with young adults. It’s an amazing opportunity to use track and field to be a part of their lives and make an impact.”

Becker said he fell in love with track while he was at Cedar Catholic High School.
