Wildcat boys, Wynot girls win Classic Tourney titles

HARTINGTON — The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats pulled away in the final frame of Friday’s Classic Tournament title game to earn a 55-42 win over Wynot.

The Wildcats used a big 20-12 burst at the end of the game to pull away and earn their fifth win of the season. Wynot’s record fell to 4-8 with the loss.

It was the one-two punch of Shaye Morten and Sam Harms that led the Wildcats to the big win.

Morten took scoring honors for the game with 18 points and Harms was right behind with his 17-point effort. Wynot was led by Anthony Haberman who finished with 15 points and Peyton Wieseler, who also hit for double figures with his 10 points.

This one started out as a defensive battle. Shaye Morten hit a trey early and Jake Peitz added a bucket for the Wildcats.

Wynot countered with field goals by Peyton Wieseler and Garrett Lange, as the game was tied at 7-7 at the end of the first period.

Shaye Morten would erupt for seven secondquarter points and Sam Harms dropped in a pair of buckets in close for Hartington-Newcastle as they went on a 16-12 run to lead 23-19 at halftime. Garrett Lange had five points and Hunter Heimes connected for four points to keep the Blue Devils close.

The Blue Devils stayed in the game from long range in the third quarter.

Owen Sudbeck, Anthony Haberman and Peyton Wieseler all hit 3-pointers in the third quarter. The Wildcats got a pair of driving lay-ins from Shaye Morten and six points in the paint from Sam Harms, as they held a 34-30 advantage going into the final period of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils got a second 3-pointer each from Anthony Haberman and Peyton Wieseler but they could not close the gap.

Hartington-Newcastle got six more points from Sam Harms, including a couple of slam dunks, four points inside as well from Matthew Meisenheimer and a 3-pointer from Jake Peitz as they pulled away for the 55-42 win.
