City decides to pave library alley

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Public Library will soon be able t mark a project complete that’s been on its strategic plan for more tha 20 years.

The Hartington City Council approved the paving of the alley behind the library at its meeting last week.

“This has been a long time coming. I am pretty thrilled they approved it,” said Library Director Tami Anderson.

The Council approved a bid of $40,467 from Leise Concrete to complete the work.

Handicapped parking was added to the back of the library buildin when a new addition was completed in 1997 but the gravel alley remained, Anderson said, and a double-handicapped door was added some time later.

A larger doorway was necessary after hearing from a handicapped man about difficulty getting into the building. The same man indicated he traveled through the alley on his electric scooter which couldn’t handle the gravel.

In 2012, new carpeting was added to the library.

“We definitely wanted the alley paved due to the gravel and stuff coming in on the new carpet,” Anderson said.

She said the library board goes over its strategic plan every five years and paving the alley has been a goal on every plan.
