City Council grants more special permits for Hartington Dayz

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council granted two more special liquor licenses Monday to accommodate the expected crowds for the Aug. 12 Hartington Dayz street dance.

Marcy’s Main Street and Emma Lu B’s were both granted special liquor licenses for the event. Big Hair Brewhaus and The Chief had previously been granted licenses for the event, which will be held on the intersection of Main Street and Broadway Avenue in downtown Hartington.

The Council also approved a liquor license for Big Hair Brewhaus to provide alcohol sales at the Hotel Hartington. Owner Casey Rossiter said the plan is to be able to serve alcohol during special events at the facility, not to open another full-time bar in town.

Also Monday, Hartington Mayor Mark Becker recommended the city request that the speed limit coming in to town from the west be reduced. This will make it safer on this stretch of highway, and should also help to reduce any potential traffic problems with a proposed new driveway into the new industrial park.

In other action, the Council heard a report from City Clerk Brittni Benscoter about camping fees being charged in other communities. She said Hartington, which currently charges $16 a night at the city-owned camper court, has by far the cheapest rate in the area.

Benscoter said she is also looking into modernizing the reservation system for the camper court.

She has been looking at a company that provides online reservations and online payments at the camper court.

Council members agreed to have City Attorney Steve Pier draft an ordinance to raise that rate to $25 a night. The Council also agreed to a request from Ambulance Service President Troy Bottolfsen to pay for Katelynn Fischer to take advanced life support and paramedic courses. It will cost around $11,000 for the twoyear course, Bottolfsen said.

The Council also granted special permits for Hartington-Newcastle and Cedar Catholic to cross the highway during their Homecoming parades.

Cedar Catholic will hold its Homecoming on Sept. 15, while HNS will put on its Homecoming one week later on Sept. 22.
