Cedar, Wynot make final NSAA Cup standings
HARTINGTON — Both the Cedar Catholic and Wynot high school athletic programs had plenty to look back on and cheer about this school year.
That was confirmed recently when the NSAA Cup final standings for Class D were confirmed and both were represented in the Top 10.
The Cedar Catholic athletic program finished seventh overall with 230 points and was spearheaded by the boys, who ended up tied for ninth with 147.5 points.
The Wynot girls ended up 10th on their side of the ledger with 132.5 points.
“I really felt that was a sign of a great year for us in extra-curricular activities,” Cedar Catholic athletic director and head track and football coach Chad Cattau said. “A majority of our teams were able to qualify for state competition which really helped us in accumulating points throughout the year.
Cattau said the ranking shows true dedication on the part of the school and its students and coaches.
“I really feel this achievement is a great tribute to our coaches, athletes and support systems that really make these things possible,” he said.
The basketball teams both finished fourth at state and the football team ended up making the quarterfinals while volleyball also made it to state, as did the track and field squads, along with golf doing its fair share of heavy lifting.
“We are blessed to have a lot of people that put in countless hours and contribute in a wide variety of ways to the overall success of our programs,” Cattau said. “I think this year really sets a standard of what we can set as an overall goal for our school for this next year. We can look at our overall score and try to better that this next season.”
Current Cedar Catholic senior Tate Thoene was knee-deep in plenty of the Trojans’ achievements, and he believes it’s a byproduct of a lot of committed moving parts.
“That’s pretty cool,” Thoene said of the result. “It says a lot about our programs and our coaches. We have good offseason work outs and kids just care. I hope this next year we can do this same thing. It’s pretty promising.
“This year kids wanted to do well and a lot of them had good work ethic. It matters to us how we do in sports and academics.”
For Wynot, it was a bevy of state appearances across the board for the girls who led the charge for the Blue Devils.
“Balance, dedication, and commitment leads to team and school success,” Wynot athletic director and girls basketball coach Steve Wieseler said. “Our school participated at the state level at every program we have to offer. We competed at the state level in football, volleyball, girls and boys basketball, boys and girls track, with the girls winning state in the 4-by-1 and the 4-by-4.
“We also participated at the state level in one act and speech with the OID team winning state and we had students participating in state vocal and musical performances. It was truly a great school year for both the boys and girls.”
