Cedar wrestlers earn medals at Summerland, Stanton

STANTON — Two Cedar Catholic wrestlers picked up silver medals, while four others earned bronze medals as the Trojans earned a thirdplace finish as a team at Saturday’s Stanton Invitational.

Kerby Hochstein made a successful return to wrestling last week. The Cedar Catholic senior had to sit out the first week of action as part of a COVID quarantine. He came back strong last week, though, earning a runner-up finish at the always-tough Stanton Invitational.

Conner Hochstein also earned a second place finish. Keegan Carl, Tavious Pinkelman, Cole Steffensen and Kyle Lemme all recorded wins to earn third-place medals at the meet. Another Cedar wrestler, Kale Korth, earned a fifth-place medal.

Kerby Hochstein started his day with a :36 pin over Chase Hofmeister of Pender. He earned a second period pin over Ethan Underwood of David City in his next match and had his quick outing of the day in his next match when he stuck Wakefield’s Franco Tapia in just 11 seconds.

Norfolk Catholic’s Kanyon Talton earned an 8-4 decision over Hochstein in the championship match for his only loss on the day.

Conner Hochstein lost to Clayton Harris of David City in the 152-pound title match. He earned four pins to advance to the title match, His quickest pin just took 40 seconds against Ronnie Ramirez of Wakefield.

The Cedar Catholic team also competed at the Summerland Invite on Dec. 10, finishing in sixth place in the 12-team tourney.

Conner Hochstein recorded four pins to earn a spot in the 152-pound championship match. He then lost to O’Neill’s Levi Drueke in a first-period pin, and had to settle for runner-up honors.

Kyle Lemme had his best outing of the year at 182 pounds, recording three pins, including a 38 second pin over Niobrara-Verdigre’s Gavin Chohon in the third-place match.

Keegan Carl earned a third-place finish at the meet. Cole Steffensen and Tavious Pinkelman both earned fourth-place finishes, while Nash Albers earned a fifth-place medal at 145-pounds and Kale Korth was fifth at 160-pounds.

Rogers Aiaden finished the day in sixth place.
