Cedar will hit the road this week; HNS, Wynot will have home-court advantage

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The local high school basketball scene begins to heat up this week as area teams get into the heart of their schedules.

CEDAR CATHOLIC

Games this Week: Thursday at Dakota Valley, and Friday at Pierce.

Outlook: The Trojans coaching staff expects a tough game at Dakota Valley coming off a rough loss to LCC, which got 40 points from Noah Schutte. Myles Thoene’s 19 points, Brady Steffen’s 13 points and the 11-point offerings by Tate Thoene and Charlie Schroeder weren’t enough to keep the Cedar Catholic boys from falling to 6-2.

Cedar will also have a rematch with the alwaystough Pierce Blue Jays. The Trojans beat Pierce for the Knight title in Fremont earlier in the month, but that means nothing, now. It’s always close when Cedar and Pierce get together on the basketball court.

Last week’s results: Lost to LCC, 77-59

Coach Matt Steffen Comments: “We didn’t do a good job of defending the whole game. We gave up way too many easy shots and they made all of them.”

HARTINGTON-NEWCASTLE

Games this Week: Friday vs. Homer

Outlook: The Wildcats (5-6) will look to push their win streak to three games and build their confidence against a much improved Homer side that can hit from outside.

Last week’s results: Beat Winside, 59-19; Beat Wynot, 55-42.

Coach Nick Haselhorst Comments: “Against Winside, the boys came out and asserted themselves defensively, which led to multiple transition scoring opportunities.  Wynot was a hard-fought game on both sides. Both teams kind of felt each other out in the first quarter and we made a run in the second quarter. They answered right before halftime to get back into it. The intensity picked up on both sides in the third quarter, and we were fortunate enough to make another run in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference in the outcome.”

RANDOLPH

Games this Week: Friday vs. Wausa; Tuesday at Winside

Outlook: Keaton Bacchaus, Jamison Svehla and Justin Haselhorst came up big for Randolph this week as the Cardinals (5-6) fell just short in their only contest.

Last week’s results: Lost to Creighton, 52-51

Coach Mark Anderson Comments: “Another 50/50 game and we just came up short at the end. We are playing well, just need to keep making plays at the end of games.”

WYNOT

Games this Week: Friday vs. Winnebago

Outlook: It was a split week as the Blue Devils won to get to the final of the Classic Tournament and fell to the host Wildcats. In a win against Bloomfield, Anthony Haberman and Garrett Lange each splashed home 12 points. Winnebago likes to play in transition and can shoot it from three, and dribble-drive and hit lay-ups.  Transition defense and limiting good, deep looks will be key.

Last week’s results: Beat Bloomfield, 50-36; Lost to Hartington/Newcastle, 55-42.

Coach Lee Heimes Comments: “Against Bloomfield, we played really good team defense and we were balanced on offense with a lot of different players scoring. The championship was close throughout until the fourth quarter when they pulled away. We played hard, but had too many turnovers on offense. Their 1-3-1 and length gave us some trouble. We are improving with each game we play.”
