Cedar starts the new year on the right track

Posted in:

ALBION — The Cedar Catholic Trojans handed MidStates foe Boone Central a lopsided 78-43 setback in opening-season action here Friday night.

Cedar handled the ball well all night long, connecting on 57 of its field goal attempts and 33 percent from behind the arc. The Trojans were 60 percent from the charity stripe.

Both offenses had free reign to run and gun in the opening frame and they did just that. Cedar ended up outscoring the home team, 27-19, in a wild first-quarter.

Defense took over in the second frame as the Trojans were able to outscore the Cardinals 14-6 to take a 41-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Thoene boys led the Cedar offense as both Myles and Tate Thoene tossed in 17 points each. Tate Thoene was deadly, hitting 2-2 from the free throw line, 3-4 of his field goals and 3-6 from long distance.

Myles Thoene was just 2-8 from long distance, but fared better from close in, hitting 5-9 field goal attempts.

Charlie Schroeder also had a great opening game, picking up a double-double.

He worked the paint well, only missing on two shot attempts all night, finishing with 16 points.

Tate and Myles Thoene were also a force on defense, as they combined for nine steals and nine defensive rebounds.
